I've never thought of myself as an artist; I'm just a guy who likes playing with clay. I'm a lawyer by training and by now I've seen enough courtrooms to last three lifetimes. Not long ago I realized that something should change in my career path. So I'm transitioning from the courtroom to the studio and I'm getting my hands dirty. Working with clay has been my hobby since high school but it's now my primary pursuit. I couldn't be happier.
I began exploring ceramics in high school and loved it immediately. I was fortunate to have an amazing instructor who shared his passion of making functional pieces seem like artwork. His top priority was to get his students to let go of 'the perfect.' He would say, "You're working with material that comes from the earth, and nothing from the earth is perfectly smooth or flawless. Don't let your artistic process negate the rawness of your materials." I have tried to follow that guidance. I strive for functional excellence while acknowledging that clay is a medium that does not allow for absolute uniformity, consistency, or symmetry. I work with a variety of clay bodies and glazes and try to make each piece seem unique.
